Sedentarization as an adaptation to socio-environmental changes? Everyday herding practices in pastoralist communities in southern Ethiopia

As humanity is faced with various changes in social-environmental systems, adaptation efforts have become increasingly important. Significant effort and resources been spent on devising overarching, large-scale strategies response to climate change associated socioeconomic challenges. However, the mechanisms of employed by individuals households ordinary, daily life received insufficient scholarly examination. This research aims demonstrate significance everyday smallholder pastoralists who are front lines changing regimes East African drylands. We analyzed spatiotemporal patterns livestock behavior understand practices. Two different pastoralist communities Borana Zone southern Ethiopia were compared, one which keeps traditional mobile pastoralism livelihood, while other has sedentarized because socio-environmental policy incentives. The larger grazing areas, their cattle spend more time foraging resting. In contrast, utilize land near settlements intensively travel longer distances average. Our findings suggest that sedentarization a constrained strategy at best it increases recursive use rangeland its fragmentation forces move seasonal basis.
